As expected, former Detroit Police Chief James Craig announced Thursday that he’s waging a write-in campaign for the Republican gubernatorial race for governor in the August primary.

Craig was recently booted from the ballot for having too many forged signatures on his petitions, which left him short of the requisite number. Perry Johnson and three other candidates were also bounced because of signature issues.

"I am not giving up, they have robbed me, and robbed Perry and guess what - write-in," he said on Fox 2’s Let It Rip. "There are so many people that have reached out through my campaign who have said, 'Chief you are a fighter, don't give up, continue to fight.' Guess what? I'm going to."

He went on to say:

"Let me just say this - this is crap, you know it's crap," he said. "I'm not going to roll over … I'm going to tell you - I am going to win. I am the best candidate to unseat Governor Whitmer."

Craig has had a bumpy campaign.

His announcement for governor in September 2021 was a bit of an embarrassment when members of "Detroit Will Breath" cut short and drowned out his announcement on Belle Isle that he was running for governor.  Shortly after he gave his speech from a rooftop patio near the riverfront.

Craig also burned through multiple campaign managers, earning a reputation for ignoring some of their advice.
