William Melendez
William Melendez, the Inkster cop caught on dashcam beating motorist Floyd Dent during a traffic stop in January 2015, has been granted early release from prison, WXYZ reports. He is serving 1 to 10 years in prison for the beating.
Jim Kiertzner of WXYZ, citing unnamed sources, reports that while an exact date has not been determined, Melendez could be released as early as Dec. 15.
The video got nationwide attention and became part of the dialogue about police treatment of black citizens.
The Department of Corrections website shows that the earliest Melendez, 48, can be released under his sentence is Dec. 15, and the latest, Nov. 15, 2025.
