The FBI is investigating allegations that Dr. Paul DeWeese, a former state House majority whip,  served as a narcotics supplier to more than 20 patients who received little to no examination before being handed large prescriptions, the Detroit Free Press reports.

Daniel Bethencourt of the Detroit Free Press writes that many of the patients allegedly abused the drugs for a high, and at least a few turned around and dealt the drugs to others.

On July 18, his medical license was suspended, a few weeks after FBI agents hauled away patients’ files from his Lansing office, the Freep reports.

DeWeese has not been charged, but the allegations were contained in an FBI search warrant request.

“The allegations are either gross misunderstandings or outright falsehoods,” DeWeese said in a telephone interview with the Free Press. “I’ve always felt I’ve acted in a medically appropriate way, both professionally and ethically.”
