Oakland Circuit Court jurors are scheduled to begin deliberating Sandra Layne's fate after an eight-day trial that wraps up with closing arguments Monday morning, Dave Phillips reports in The Oakland Press.

Layne is charged with open murder, as well as possession of a firearm in commission of a felony, in the May 18 shooting death of Hoffman inside their West Bloomfield Township condominium. . . .

Jurors must determine whether she should be convicted of first-degree murder, second-degree murder or manslaughter.

Layne’s attorney, Jerome Sabbota, also is seeking the addition of involuntary manslaughter to the possible charges, but Oakland County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Paul Walton has objected. The decision on that charge will be made before jury instructions are read Monday.

Layne does not deny shooting Hoffman, but she claims that he hit her during an argument, prompting her initial gunshots.
