Melvin Phillips, 31, is charged with second-degree child abuse after a BB gun shooting wounded his 2-year-old son.
The incident happened Friday in an east-side Detroit home in the 4000 block of Bedford Street (Morningside neighborhood).
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office says the father was handling the BB gun when it discharged, striking the son in the lips. The gun had been in a china cabinet.
The mother and father took the boy to a hospital, where they were met by police officers who later investigated and took the gun from the home.
Phillips was scheduled to be arraigned Monday.
