Some good news for advocates of same sex marriage.
U.S. District Judge Mark Goldsmith in Detroit ruled Thursday that 300 same-sex marriages in Michigan are valid, calling them a "fundamental right," according to Tresa Baldas of the Detroit Free Press.
"In these circumstances, what the state has joined together, it may not put asunder.," Goldsmith said in his opinion.
Baldas writes:
Goldsmith's ruling was in response to a lawsuit filed by eight same-sex couples who got married during a window of opportunity last March after a federal judge struck down Michigan's ban on same-sex marriage. Roughly 300 couples got married that day.
The next day, a federal appeals court put the judge's decision that legalized gay marriage on hold, and the state has since refused to recognize the marriages.
Goldsmith said the state has no legal right to do that.
Attorney General Bill Schuette said he looked forward to the Supreme Court ruling on the issue.
