It's no surprise violence erupted Monday between protestors and white nationalists before white supremacist Richard Spencer's 5 p.m. speech on the Michigan State University campus in East Lansing.
Multiple people were arrested, Johnathan Oosting of The Detroit News reports:
Members of the crowd could be seen punching and pushing each other, with at least one Spencer supporter tackled by police as he ran through the crowd toward the pavilion where Spencer was to speak.
With a marching band blaring, an electric crowd vacillated between “no KKK” chants, “[expletive] Nazi” interjections and impromptu dance circles. Some wore scarves covering their faces. Others proudly displayed colorful protest signs.
David Jesse of the Detroit Free Press and RJ Wolcott of the Lansing State Journal report:
At least 100 police officers appeared to be on the scene in riot gear. Two armored police vehicles were spotted at the scene also. Michigan State Police also arrived.
Shortly after 4 p.m., fights and arrests broke out at the tense scene, as a small group of Spencer supporters showed up and protesters tried to drive them back. Bottles and rocks were thrown.
