Tiffani Eaton
Tiffani Eaton, the Detroit teacher who was fired last year in May after she used a broom to break up a classroom fight, is suing the Education Achievement Authority that oversees low-achieving Detroit schools, Fox 2 reports.
Eaton, who taught at Pershing High School, filed a federal lawsuit last week seeking unspecified damages.
According to the filing, Eaton claims administrators to warn or prepare her for the 'violent conditions' at the school and she never "received an employee handbook and was untrained to handle violent disputes amongst gang members." She also says in the suit that other teachers who helped break up the fight were not disciplined like her.
Eaton said that she used her two-way radio to summon help, but it didn't work as one boy was on top of the other, punching him in the face, Fox 2 reports. She said she used the broom to break up the figtht after exhausting other possibilities.
She was initially fired, but had overwhelming community support. A week after the firing, the school reversed its decision and reinstated her, but she refused to accept the job, saying she didn't feel safe.
