Time was, adult human beings were able to properly clean themselves after going number two with good old-fashioned toilet paper. Remember? Those were good times.
Unfortunately, the infant infantilization of society in the name of consumer spending has convinced far too many supposed grown-ups that they need to use over-glorified baby wipes on their tender bums. And when those "flushable wipes" get flushed down the toilet, they clog up sewers and flood basements.
Windsor has had enough.
Windsor Star: The city has identified sewer blockages as “a primary factor” contributing to Windsor’s basement flooding woes during storm conditions. A big contributing factor, according to Windsor and 24 other cities which have formed the Municipal Enforcement Sewer Use Group, are consumer products labelled as safe to be flushed down the toilet, everything from personal wipes increasingly replacing toilet paper, and even baby wipes and kitty litter.
“These are things people take for granted,” said Sonego. Some of the products cause blockages and sewer backups, while others generate grit that’s added to treatment systems, resulting in quicker wearing down of equipment and increased costs.
Windsor would like Canadian officials to tighten regulations about what products can be labels as "flushable." That's fine, but let's go one step further: If you're old enough to take care of your own business, then you're too old to use some fancy wipe. I don't care how much aloe it has.
