For the first time in history the Lions will play a regulation game overseas.
The NFL announced Thursday that the Lions will play the Atlanta Falcons at London's Wembley Stadium next season in 2014. Not date has been set.
Other NFL games scheduled in London include:
The Jaguars against the Cowboys and the Raiders against the Dolphins.
"This is a chance for our team to play on an international stage and do that against a really high quality opponent in the Falcons," Lions president Tom Lewand told detroitlions.com. "That's a really good challenge for them. The travel. The crowd size. The pageantry that's involved. Those things provide valuable experience for any team and its players."
"Our fans in the UK continue to demonstrate their passion for more football," NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said in a statement released by the league. "Next year for the first time we will play three regular-season games in London. We have scheduled three attractive games with four teams playing in their first International Series game. The growing enthusiasm for the NFL internationally is exciting and we look forward to continuing to respond to this interest in our game."
