Bryan Burwell

Bryan Burwell, a former Detroit News sports columnist who went on to become a columnist with the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, died Thursday after a short battle with cancer. He was 59.

Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes:

No one liked game day more than Bryan Burwell. He loved the camaraderie of the press box, the ebb and flow of that day's athletic event, and the labor of love in bringing that event to life for Post-Dispatch readers.

Facebook followers of Burwell posted condolences throughout the day:

Mark Ellington wrote: Wow. So sorry to hear you've passed on Bryan. You were a leader, mentor and great individual even without your excellence in your field. God bless your wife and daughter. I will continue to keep them in my prayers. God Bless.

Mark Weber wrote: I worked with Bryan at SportsTalk 980 in Washington DC - one of my all-time favorites. Insightful, funny and classy - a great host and wonderful guy. My thoughts go out to his friends and family.

Burwell had also worked at one times as a columnist for USA Today and was a correspondent for HBO Sports.
