A scandal has erupted at the state Bellamy Creek Correctional Facility in Ionia.

Paul Egan of the Detroit Free Press reports that four female kitchen workers for Aramark, the company that provides food services for state prisons, were fired Wednesday for having inappropriate sexual contact with male inmates inside a walk-in cooler. The state said there was kissing and sexual touching but no intercourse.

“It’s unprecedented that four workers at the same facility, in the same day, are placed on stop order,” Corrections Department spokesman Russ Marlan told the Freep. “It’s concerning on a number of levels.”

The firings were apparently just another indicator of the problems Aramark employees have had at the state prisons

Egan reports that the firings mean more than 80 Aramark workers have now been banned from prison property for various infractions since the company took over on Dec. 8.
