There's no shortage of photographers focusing on Detroit, so 37-year-old Amy Sacka's challenge was to carve a distinctive niche when she returned to her home region after eight years in Seattle.
That niche, as Lauren Abdel-Razzaq describes in The Detroit News, involves a website and a year-long stream of photos. Seventeen accompany the article/
She ended up in Detroit's Woodbridge neighborhood and settled on a photo-a-day format. For 365 days, she will photograph the city and post one each day, along with a short story, on her website, www.owenwashere.com. . . .
Sacka, who grew up in Grosse Pointe Woods, is up to Day 63 of her project.
"Sometimes, I'll have an idea in my head that I want to communicate and I'll go out and look for something that complements that story," she said. "But more often then not, I'll go out and get the images and afterwards it will all come together."
Sometimes she shoots in black and white, sometimes in vibrant color. Sometimes, she opts for sweeping landscapes and other times for single profile shots.
There's little room for ruin porn here. Instead, Sacka offers a look at a pulsating, unique city where even the average person on the street has a story worth telling.
