Brenda Scott Academy for Theater Arts

Here's a story that should make any parent nervous and concerned.

John Wisely of the Detroit Free Press reports:

Detroit is home to more than 3,000 registered sex offenders, including hundreds who live near Detroit schools and harass children in the neighborhood.

One man who lived around the corner from the Brenda Scott Academy for Theater Arts on Detroit's east side was known to repeatedly approach students as they walked by.

"He walked up to one girl and asked her what color her panties were," said Bishop Tony Russell, senior pastor of New Covenant of Peace Church and a founder of the volunteer patrol called the MAN Network.

Russell said when volunteers would see the man talking to a child, they would pull up next to him, sometimes calling for two or more extra cars as a show of force, before he would leave. Police later identified him as a registered sex offender and questioned him. Though the man is no longer seen around the school, volunteers are constantly vigilant.

The Freep report notes that not all the registered sex offenders are pedophiles.
