Free Press restaurant writer Mark Kurlyandchik, armed with a fork, spoon and knife, got around quite a bit in Metro Detroit in 2017.

In fact, he ate approximately 150 meals on the job this year -- and now lists five dishes from new Detroit-area spots that stood out.

  • Whitefish sandwich from Voyager: 600 Vester St., Ferndale
  • Lobster udon from Ima: 2015 Michigan Ave., Detroit
  • Corn custard and caviar from Chef's Table at Foundation Hotel: 250 W. Larned St., Detroit
  • Parisian ham from Lady of the House: 1426 Bagley, Detroit.
  • Double cheeseburger with caramelized onions from California Burgerz: 12045 Conant, Hamtramck
