A Canadian Cabinet minister said Thursday he was "frustated and disappointed" when authorities at Detroit Metro Airport asked him to remove his turban, causing Canada to complain to U.S. officials, USA Today reports.
Navdeep Bains, minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, said he was repeatedly asked by security to remove the turban. However, he was allowed to keep it on after authorities realized who he was.
He says U.S. officials expressed regret and apologized.
"I was very frustrated and disappointed that this occurred but ultimately I was allowed to fly," Bains said. "But it was because of who I was and that should not be the case. It doesn't matter what your status is and what your position is."
