On the eighth day, the ghost of Paul Harvey told Super Bowl viewers, God created farmers. Harvey, who died in 2009, went on to explain that farmers are amazing and special people who (the commercial strongly implies) couldn't be amazing or special with the help of a Ram pick-up truck.
The American Gothic imagery of heartland farmers toiling in fields of amber waves of grain may be satisfying to those of us who don't have to toil in fields, it really isn't an accurate depiction of how American agriculture gets food to your table.
And, fair enough, the Ram Super Bowl commercial wasn't a school report. It was an emotional plea to get you to buy a truck, even if you aren't a farmer or tradesman or otherwise are someone with a practical need for a pick-up truck. Chrysler didn't really pretend otherwise.
However, if you wondered what that commercial would have been like if it included an honest portrayal of modern agriculture, Funny Or Die has recut the ad just for you.
"And God said, sometimes agribusiness grows crops that no one needs, but they still want to get paid," fake Paul Harvey explains in the Funny Or Die version. "So God made farm subsidies."
