Popular bars around Metro Detroit were awash in red and white velvet Saturday as hundreds of Santas-for-a-night and friends in foxy reindeer outfits joined the 14th annual Detroit Santarchy.
The rolling revelry was similar to costumes-mandatory Santarchy events the same night in Seattle, New York, Nashville, Valencia near LA and elsewhere.
The local version typically draws 1,500 to 2.,000 people paying $20 each for bus passes, organizers say.
Local participants grabbed early evening buses from Monroe, Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti and six Detroit suburbs to reach the Corktown base at the Gaelic League Detroit Irish American Club on Michigan Avenue. From there, a dozen chartered coaches made a loop to participating pubs.
"Just make sure at the end of the night you find the bus you rode in on and take it back home," the organizers advised online. "Try and stay sober enough to remember your city. . . . Keeps tabs on who you came with and leave no Santa behind."
Destinations included PJ's Lager House near the starting spot, the Old Miami, Harry's, Nancy Whiskey Pub, New Place Lounge in Dearborn, Mallie's Bar in Southgate and the Imperial in Ferndale.
As for the required look, participants were warned:
Lameness will not be tolerated! Come up with somethin' cool and unique, but no street clothes and a Santa hat or you will be ostracized! . . .
Elves, reindeer, Jack Frost, snowmen, Yetis, etc. are all welcome and we appreciate your creativity and effort. The more twisted the better. . . . So just to be clear: Wear a costume and keep your Mom's ugly ass sweaters at home!
