Update: Friday, 4:48 p.m. -- Tigers beat the Yankees 4-0.
Despite nippy weather, the sun lit up the sea of happy faces in and about Comerica Park Friday. Fans trekked from near and afar to witness Opening Day for the Detroit Tigers.
In many ways, it's a holiday that doesn't require cards or an official day off, just hot dogs, beer and other munchies -- preferably unhealthy ones.
The Tigers game began shortly after 1 p.m. Kirk Gibson threw a ceremonial opening pitch.

Yes, on these days, beer is the breakfast of champions
And oh yes, a little reminder from reporters at the Detroit News and Free Press that all is not well when it comes to contracts
What's a game without ticket scalpers?
Time to get to the seats
Not everyone was there to enjoy the game
