The three-day Winter Blast at Campus Martius is attracting hardy folks who embrace the season, even on a frigid Saturday.

In comments to The Detroit News, event producer Jon Witz acknowledges "a lighter start because of the temperatures.” He's hoping for a traffic boost by Sunday, with a high temperature forecast of 24 degrees.

The annual Blast has skating, free snowshoeing, dogsled demonstrations and the popular Buick Snow Slide, back after a two-year gap. absence. Three lanes let riders drop at about 20 mph for seven seconds.

There also are "Comfort Zone" tents with live music, food and souvenir vendors.

“Our motto is ‘you can find heat every 150 feet,’ ” Witz tells Holly Fournier of The News. “Tents are set at 65 degrees.”

It runs until 11 p.m. today and 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. Admission is $2 or three canned food items or one children’s book. Donated items go to Matrix Human Services.
