With a move as smooth as freshly polished ice, Quicken Loans preserves a downtown tradition that was in jeopardy of disappearing. 

Brian McCollum of the Free Press previews a Wednesday afternoon announcement about this year's Motown Winter Blast, a free event featuring skating, live music, ice carving and other outdoor activities:

2013 01 09 064602The ninth edition of the annual family festival will take place Feb. 8-10 at Detroit’s Campus Martius Park  . . . A late-hour assist from Quicken Loans proved the salvation. . . .

Quicken Loans founder Dan Gilbert has increasingly become the face of downtown. 

The event had been in doubt when the Ambassador Bridge's owner withdrew as title sponsor.

Quicken Loans agreed last week to a title sponsorship, said festival producer Jon Witz, alongside what he described as “significantly increased support” from Ilitch Holdings. . . .

The free Winter Blast, which highlights seasonally themed activities such as ice-skating and snowshoeing, debuted in 2005 as part of the year-long lead-up to Super Bowl XL.
