A 5-year-old girl apparently shot and killed herself after playing with her grandparent's gun around midnight Tuesday on Oakfield Avenue in Detroit, WDIV reports.
Lauren Podell of WDIV reports that the girl was identified as Mariah Davis.
A relative tells WDIV that the grandparents were babysitting for Mariah, her 1-year-old brother and a friend's 3-year-old child and the grandmother was downstairs cooking when the shooting happened. The girl may have found the gun under a pillow in a bedroom upstairs, the station reports.
“They heard the shot and her granddaddy ran in there like, ‘What was that?’ And she was laying on the bed with her dolls," Shawnte McMichael, the girl's niece, told the station.
The grandparents were being questioned by police.
