The death toll in the General Motors ignition-switch defect mess continues to climb.

Reuters news service reports that compensation expert Kenneth R. Feinberg who is presiding over the claims has determined so far that 56 deaths, nine severe injuries and 78 injuries are eligible for some kind of payment.

The news agency also reported that GM received 75 more claims last week for compensation, bringing the overall total to 4,312.

A report said 513 claims had been deemed ineligible.
