Recalls are never pretty, particularly when they're triggered by multiple deaths.

It makes you wonder at what point automakers decide to cry uncle and go for the recall.

Bloomberg business news reports that General Motors is recalling 778,562 Chevrolet Cobalt and Pontiac G5 sedans in North America after six deaths were linked to faulty ignition switches.

The switches may have  caused the car engines and air bags to switch off, Bloomberg reported, adding that the fatal crashes occurred off-road and at high speeds.

Just as an aside: The Colbalt was not one of GM's better cars. -- Allan Lengel
