Mary Barra

General Motors CEO Mary Barra edged out Ford's Mark Fields when it comes to compensation.

In 2016, she earned a compensation valued at $22.6 million, about $6 million less than in 2015 but still more than her counterparts at Ford and Fiat Chrysler, Brent Snavely of the Detroit Free Press reports.

Fields earned $22.1 million and Sergio Marchonne of Fiat Chrysler made $11.99 million.

Barra is the first CEO in the auto industry.

The value of her total compensation fell by about 21% in 2016, with the biggest difference being that she did not receive new stock options awards in 2016 compared with $11.2 million in stock options in 2015.
