Here's a dose of good economic news.

JC Reindl of the The Detroit Free Press reports that permits for  new single-family homes in metro Detroit are off to their strongest start since 2007.

Reindl noted that the hike in permits in January was a possible indicator that last year's rebound in home construction may be carrying over to this year.

Specifically, the data shows that there were 250 home permits issued in January in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. That is a 13% jump from December and an  84% increase from January 2012.
