One amusing story after another painted a portrait of man whose greatness transcended the ice where he became legend.

Hundreds gathered late Wednesday morning for the funeral service of Red Wings star Gordie Howe at the 850-seat Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament on Woodward Avenue in Detroit, The Detroit News reports. He died at 88 last Friday.

Dr. Murray Howe delivered a touching eulogy for his father before the mass, reciting amusing anecdotes about his father's kindness, humor and charm.
