Personal gestures matter, particularly in politics.
Newly minted Gov. Gretchen Whitmer emphasizes bipartisanship as her first term begins. How long that lasts is anyone's guess, but on Wednesday she showed what reaching out to the other party looks like by contacting the former lieutenant governor:
I hope she does not mind me sharing this, but earlier today I received a call from the Governor. She heard that a friend of mine recently passed, unexpectedly. She texted condolences yesterday (a very busy day for her). Today, she followed up with a call. So very thoughtful.

Calley is among those mourning Travis Weber, former chief legal counsel to Gov. Rick Snyder. The 2008 Michigan State graduate was found dead Monday night by friends at his Detroit home. He died of an apparent suicide, Gongwer News Service reports.
"Politics can be a rough sport. But it's still a sport that involves humans," tweets Chad Livengood of Crain's Detroit Business, confirming that Calley says Whitmer's condolences involved Weber, 33. (The Saginaw News has an obituary.)
