A long-awaited U.S. presidential permit from Washington to build a new Detroit River bridge has been approved with an announcement to be made Friday in Detroit, the Windsor Star is reporting. 

Several sources from both sides of the border told reporter Dave Battagello they have been invited to attend the announcement to be made near the site of the new $1-billion government-backed bridge by Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder.

Approval of the permit by the U.S. Department of State has been regarded as the final political step before property acquisition and construction can get underway for the Detroit River International Crossing (DRIC) bridge.

“That’s good news,” said former Ontario Finance Minister Dwight Duncan, who retired from politics in February and who was one of the lead Canadian politicians on the DRIC bridge the last 10 years. “That is the last step on the U.S. side needed to go ahead.
