Gov. Gretchen Whitmer indicated Friday she'll likely veto GOP-led legislation to suspend Michigan's 27-cent per gallon gas tax to help ease the pain at the pump, The Detroit News reports.
The Michigan House voted Wednesday to suspend the tax for half a year, and the Senate is expected to follow next week. The action comes after Whitmer and five other governors on Tuesday asked the federal government to suspend its 18-cent tax on gasoline.
Temporarily lifting the state levy "will gut funding for road repairs and save Michiganders maybe, just maybe, enough to replace one tire when a pothole blows one out," tweets Rep. Laurie Pohutsky, D-Livoinia.
Whitmer tried to dodge question about the GOP legislation at a press conference Friday, saying she planned to bring tax relief through other programs.
The News reports:
Any sort of tax relief should have "a real laser focus" on those who are "struggling to keep their head above water," Whitmer said. When pressed again on whether she would sign the bill, the governor said:
"It won't have lived up to any of those things I just said so you can draw your own conclusions."
