The strange greenish-yellow ooze that's been seeping through the freeway wall on the shoulder of I-696 and Couzens in Madison Heights has been identified as a known carcinogen, Fox 2 reports.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency on Saturday identified the substance as Hexavelent Chromium, a chemical used in manufacturing, a known carcinogen which can cause cancer. As of Saturday, a portion of the service drive was closed.
Hazmat crews claim there is no imminent threat to the public, but officials are concerned material that enters storm drains along I-696 eventually travels to Lake St. Clair.
Michigan State Police tell Fox 2 the chemical is coming from a condemned commercial building on East 10 Mile Road. The chemical ran from the basement of the building into the ground and found its way to a drain which empties onto east bound I-696.
The liquid was cleaned from the freeway and authorities were looking to address the material in the building.
