Three years ago, the city of Grosse Pointe Park stuck a controversial barrier in the middle of Kercheval and Alter at the Detroit border. Officials called it a "traffic calming device." Detroiters called it a racist blockade to keep residents out. 

After pressure, Grosse Pointe Park removed the divider, but the division between the cities remains. Now comes a gesture of peace. 

Grosse Pointe Park officials will dedicate a new sculpture, "Sails of Two Cities," on Thursday afternoon, reports Bill Laitner of the Detroit Free Press. 

The sculpture signals a change that the frictions between the two cities is ending, says Grosse Pointe Park City Council member Laurie Aurora. "I think the healing has begun," Aurora she states.
