Humor is often in the ear of the listener, and sometimes it crosses a line.
Some audience members at a Detroit Music Hall performance by Grosse Pointe South students claim it was racist, sexist and made light of bullying, Ron Savage reports on Fox 2. Critics say it simply wasn't funny
Fox 2 reports that the show, performed by Second Suburb (a play off of Second City of Chicago) was written and performed by students.
One student from the high school said the show started out as a comedy and took a bad turn, Fox 2 reports. Another student who did not attend the show said she found out her name was mentioned in the show in a negative light.
Principal Moussa Hamka writes in a letter to parents and students: "It is clear that at least some of the content of this show was inappropriate and in many ways portrayed either our school or our students in a negative light."
Performers are remorseful, Hamka tells the station. Consequences will include community service and apologies to victimized students, she says, adding that all proceeds from the show will go back to the high school for a kindness campaign.
