It was a crime that captivated the attention of Metro Detroit for the past 10 months.
On Tuesday afternoon, the verdict finally came in.
After nearly eight hours of deliberations over two days, an Oakland County Circuit Court jury convicted Sandra Layne, 75, of second-degree murder in the multiple shooting of her 17-year-old grandson, Jonathan Hoffman last May 18 in West Bloomfield Township. She was also convicted on a firearms charge.
Layne testified during the two-week trial that she acted in self defense. But the prosecution argued that she shot him multiple times, which hardly made it seem like self defense.
A second-degree conviction carries up to life in prison with the possibility of parole.
