The great thing about August is we are so close to football season that fans can while away the dog days of summer imagining how awesome it will be when the Lions go the Super Bowl and an undefeated Michigan or Michigan State plays in the BCS National Championship game while the other school takes their one-loss team to the Rose Bowl.

The terrible thing about August is we are so close to the football season. Until teams start playing real games, there's only so much football you can talk about before the conversation just gets silly. Case in point: ESPN's Wolverine Nation last week devoted 800 words to an in-depth look at the Maize-and-Blue's beardiness.

But wide receiver Jeremy Gallon, who sports medium-length braids, said he pays attention to only one flow -- Mealer's.

"He has a face full of straight, perfect, beard hair," Gallon said. "You don't find that everywhere. I mean, look at it, you can't even put it into words. It's amazing."
