L-R Top-- Mayor Ghalib, Councilman Abu Musa. Bottom L-R: Khalil Refai and Muhtasin Sadman

Hamtramck Mayor Amer Ghalib, a big supporter of President Donald in the 2024 campagin, along with three councilmen, spent $9,662 in taxpayer funds to attend the presidential inauguration last month, the Detroit News reports, citing financial records it obtained through a Freedom of Information Act request.

Craig Mauger of The News reports the city tax dollars paid for four flights, four two-night hotel stays, a rental car, Uber rides and $274 for group dining.

The three councilmen included Abu Musa, Khalil Refai and Muhtasin Sadman, according to the documents.

Mayor Ghalib has been a Democrat, but has found some comfort with conservative Republicans when it comes to social issues like LGBQT+ rights.

At a council meeting last month after the Jan. 20 inauguration, the mayor defended the trip, saying:

“We were invited as state officials to the inauguration. So we represent the city when we go there.”
