The drama in the murder of Bob Bashara's wife Jane has resurfaced.
This time Joe Gentz, the handyman who claimed that Bob Bashara made him kill wife Jane, says Bashara is completely innocent, Shawn Ley of WDIV reports. The murder occurred in January 2012.
In an affidavit signed by Gentz, that was filed in court by Bashara's new attorney, Gentz said he killed Jane Bashara in a moment of panic while he was trying to rob the house. He said Bashara wasn't home and that Bashara hadn't paid him for a couple jobs he did as a handyman. Bashara, who is serving a life sentence for the murder, is using the affidavit to move for a new trial.
"I knew Mr. Bashara was not in his house. So, I broke into his home, walked into the garage and Mrs. Jane Bashara caught me and I lost control," Gentz said in an affidavit. He said he choked her to death.
He goes on to say he was coerced by former police chief of Grosse Pointe Park, David Hiller and a detective to lie and they coached him what to say.
WDIV reports that Gentz told the information to a fellow inmate inside the Macomb Correctional Facility, and the inmate told a private investigator who presented it to Bob Bashara's new attorney. The affidavit was signed by Gentz.
In the affidavit, he claims Police Chief Hiller told him: " 'We're going to help you and you will get a lesser sentence if you help us get Robert Bashara.' "
He said he then decided to lie to get a better deal with prosecutors.
