The head football coach for the University of Michigan had flirted with the Minnesota Vikings, but will stay at U-M at least four more years. He'll earn $7 million in base salary the first season, with performance bonuses that could reach just over $3 million, The Detroit News learns.
The contract that runs through the 2026 season was signed Wednesday and released Thursday and obtained by The Detroit News through an open-records request.
In Year 5, Harbaugh’s base salary will be $7.62 million.
Harbaugh also will receive $1 million in deferred compensation for his annual supplemental contribution retirement plan.
His salary had been cut by half after the Covid-shortened season of 2020-21, and his compensation contract reworked with incentives. However, he responded with a turnaround of the floundering team and a champtionship season.
Meanwhile, Mel Tucker of Michigan State was rewarded with a 10-year, $95 million contract that reset the board for college coaches throughout the country.
