Perhaps some people need to be reminded that it is the 21st Century.
Dr. Vesna Roi at Eastlake Pediatrics in Roseville may be one of those folks that needs that reminder.
Amy Lange of Fox 2 reports that last fall the doctor refused to treat the new born baby because the parents are lesbians.
Both of the mothers, Krista and Jami Contreras of Oak Park, who were married in Vermont in 2012, decided to put the issue out on social media recently to raise awareness about discrimination based on sexual orientation.
Last September, shortly before having their baby, they lined up Dr. Roi as their pediatrician. She was recommended by their midwife. They liked her.
Then in October, they had the baby.
"We were really happy with her," Krista told Fox 2. "The kind of care she offered, we liked her personality, she seemed pretty friendly. She seemed pretty straight up with us."
The baby was born at home, and six days later they took the baby for a doctor's appointment, Fox 2 reported.
But instead of seeing Dr. Roi, another doctor greeted them and said: 'I'll be your doctor, I'll be seeing you today because Dr. Roi decided this morning that she prayed on it and she won't be able to care for Bay."
In fact, the doctor didn't even come in the office that day, Fox 2 reported.
"It was embarrassing, it was humiliating and here we are, new parents trying to protect her," Jami told Fox 2. "And we know this happens in the world and we're completely prepared for this to happen other places. But not at our six-day-old's wellness appointment."
After that visit, they found another doctor.
Still upset, the new moms put the story on social media, and people, disturbed by the story, started calling Eastlake Pediatrics,Fox 2 reports.
On Feb. 9, the Contreras family finally received this letter from Roi, Fox 2 reported.
The letter read:
"After much prayer following your prenatal, I felt that i would not be able to develop the personal patient-doctor relationships that I normally do with my patients."
"We do not keep prenatal information once we have our meetings so I had no way to contact you."
She apologizes, saying, "I should have spoken with you directly that day," and "please know that I believe that God gives us free choice and I would never judge anyone based on what they do with that free choice."
