It takes no-fear audacity to spark up a new business when skittish shoppers are supposed to stay home.

The health emergency doesn't keep attorney Howard Luckoff from launching a Hazel Park dispensary that began medical marijuana deliveries and pickups early this month. The shop, New Standard, starts recreational sales to adults Friday -- also without walk-in browsing until who-knows-when.

Dispensaries have a green light from the governor as an "essential" business, but only with delivery or curbside transactions.

New Standard's wide delivery radius stretches to western Wayne (Redford and Dearborn), all of Detroit, Macomb (Clinton Township), as well as to the north and northwest (Rochester Hills, Farmington Hills).

Those who'd rather do pickups at its lot on John R at 10 Mile can order from this menu or by phone and pay cash at the handoff through a vehicle window. Items include buds, pre-rolls (aka joints), edibles, CBD oils and accessories.

"You can purchase up to 2.5 ounces of cannabis per day, with a total limit of 10 ounces every 30 days," advises the new retailer, which was founded in October and began medical sales April 3. It's open 10 a.m.-7 p.m. daily.

Luckoff left Rock Ventures, a Dan Gilbert company where he was general counsel, last fall to start the pot seller. He also was the top lawyer at Bedrock Detroit, another Gilbert division, from 2011-18. The Michigan State graduate ('84 and '87) earlier was a senior partner at the Honigman Miller law firm, specializing in real estate.

One of the New Standard partners is Jim Ketai, according to Crain's. He was Bedrock's chairman until stepping down last September after eight years at the firm he and Gilbert created.

Kirk Pinho writes at Crain's:

New Standard plans several other locations across Michigan, including Warren, Grand Rapids and Saugatauk, opening in the next six or so months, Luckoff said. They would be a combination of new dispensaries and ones that New Standard buys and rebrands.
