Free Press columnist Stephen Henderson isn't shocked by Mayor Dave Bing's announcement that he won't run re-election.
But he is surprised that he may try for Wayne County executive.
Henderson writes:
Does Detroit Mayor Dave Bing even live in Wayne County?
That was my instant reaction to the hubris of his announcement Tuesday that he wouldn’t seek re-election this year, but would consider a shot at Wayne County executive in 2014.
Bing’s official residence, the Manoogian Mansion, is in Detroit but belongs to Detroiters, who will be serving him an eviction notice when his term ends Jan. 1. Other than that, he lives in Franklin in Oakland County. At minimum, he would be talking about yet another address change designed to qualify him for a specific political office.
Henderson goes on to write:
And that’s to say nothing of what Wayne County residents outside of Detroit must think of Bing and his leadership. If you’re watching from Northville, or Grosse Pointe, Southgate or Brownstown, are you really looking at Detroit’s leadership and saying: “Ooh, we’ve got to get some of that for ourselves”?
