The Free Press' editorial page editor, Stephen Henderson, is upbeat this morning and thinks all Detroiters should be.

Mike Duggan's solid primary victory, in his view, is "a testament to the city’s characteristic resilience, and its desire for change."

Detroiters were apparently undeterred by the shenanigans that disqualified Duggan from the ballot for filing “too early” (a novel and insulting theory in election law), unmoved by the fact that he only moved into the city a year ago, and not particularly bothered by his skin color. . . .

Most Detroiters, like me, just want the lights on, want the cops to come, want the neighborhood abandominiums torn down — and are willing to vote for the candidates they believe will accomplish those goals.

We’ve all been lured before to false hope, and disappointment. But we keep reaching for something better.

Yes, he just coined a mash-up word: abandominiums. (We like it.)

Looking ahead, Henderson hopes the fall campaign will "be spirited, honest and revealing."
