On Sept. 16, 1963, more than 53 years ago, John F. Kennedy, the 35th president, was boasting about what a great host Detroit would be for the 1968 Olympics.
"Should Detroit be selected...I want to assure you of the warmest and most cordial welcome in the United States. Detroit is the center of a great sports community."
