Former Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick's rap sheet and corrupt reign could hurt his chances of getting less time in federal prison, legal experts told Rob Snell and Mike Wilkinson of the Detroit News.

U.S. District Judge Nancy Edmunds also could weigh the cost and length of a years-long federal probe and five-month trial and sentence Kilpatrick to consecutive terms beyond 20 years.

"In the simplest terms, it's bad news for him," said Marcellus McRae, a former federal prosecutor and trial lawyer.

"When you abuse the public trust and you're dealing with money crimes, it doesn't get any worse than this."
