John Gallagher of the Free Press tells what's up:

Construction is under way on more than 10 miles of greenways that will link the RiverWalk to Eastern Market, Midtown and Hamtramck in about a year’s time.

The work includes an extension of the popular Dequindre Cut north into Eastern Market, as well as streetscape improvements in the market, work in Midtown and creation of the Hamtramck Connector bike lanes north from the market to that community.

One goal is to encourage commuting by bike.

Support comes from a $10-million federal transportation grant and the Community Foundation of Southeast Michigan, Gallagher writes. He quotes Tom Woiwode, head of the foundation's greenways initiative, about "the potential that these kinds of infrastructure investments have in transforming communities.”
