Detroiters for years have made their top priority clear in various surveys: crime.
Newly appointed emergency manager Kevyn Orr has a long road ahead in fixing Detroit's problems, but public safety will be on the top of his to-do list, The Detroit News reports.
Orr and Gov. Rick Snyder, in a meeting last week with The Detroit News editorial board, made it clear they intend to find ways to get more police officers out from behind desks and onto city streets. Orr said he will work toward finding efficiencies, but pledges to be fair and balanced in his approach.
"There's been some discussion around the management and structural changes that can be done so we may have more people on the ground," Orr said Friday, citing the relatively large percentage of officers sitting at desks.
