When you think of a fish and chips joint, you may think of old-school restaurants like Scotty Simpson's Fish & Chips on Fenkell in Detroit that has been around since 1950. There was also the Mercury Fish and Chips at 6 Mile Road and Schaefer, which is long gone.

Now we've got a new contender in Mexicantown.

The Huron Room opened Monday at 2547 Bagley, Brenna Houck of Eater Detroit writes. It's between 18th and 19th Streets, diagonally opposite Mexican Village.

Detroit restaurant duo Jacques Driscoll and chef Les Molnar — the men behind Green Dot Stables and Johnny Noodle King — are launching their latest restaurant concept The Huron Room in Mexicantown right now. As the name implies, Huron Room draws on the Great Lakes for inspiration with aquatic décor and a very fishy sign.

The menu also has a big focus on seafood. Diners can order from fish & chips, fish tacos, and fish bolillo with their choice of perch, walleye, whitefish, smelt, trout, or the catch of the day. For those more inclined to order turf, Huron has a variety of options from pierogi to venison kofta and Vernor's to wash it all down.
