A 12-year-old boy whose mother was fatally shot on her way home from a Greektown job will be cared for by his Sterling Heights grandfather rather than his father, a convicted child molester.

Jennifer Scavone, 33, was shot Feb. 9 after her shift as a server in Greektown.

That custody ruling comes in a case related to the unsolved February slaying of Jennifer Scavone after a nigh shift at the Bouzouki Lounge. Jameson Cook has details in The Macomb Daily:

Arthur Scavone, 63, who has been caring for the 12-year-old boy, . . . gained custody over Josef Zbercot of Roseville, in a ruling Tuesday by Macomb County Circuit Judge Kathryn Viviano.

“Arthur has proven by clear and convincing evidence that custody with Josef would not serve the child’s best interest,” Viviano said, reading her opinion from the bench.

Zbercot, a commercial painter who lives with his parents,  was at the hearing and heard a stern message from the judge, which Cook quotes at the link below.  The father hasn't seen his son since last year and had visitation rights suspended indefinitely, Cook reports.

Jennifer Scavone, 33, was found shot to death Feb. 9 in her running vehicle on the shoulder of I-75 in Detroit hours after she finished working as a server at a Greektown club.

The investigation remains “very active,” Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw told Cook on Wednesday. “We do have numerous suspects we’re looking at,” he said.
