Desperate times call for desperate measures.
Imprisoned ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick has turned to Racquel Shelby, a married Southfield mom of three, to get the word out about what he believes is an ongoing injustice. He is serving 28 years for his public corruption conviction.
Shelby tells Tresa Baldas of the Detroit Free Press that she thought Kilpatrick got a raw deal and started corresponding with him by mail in February. He eventually wrote back.
In seven months, Kilpatrick has written her three letters, she said. She has written him eight, and once included a photo of herself, the Freep reports.
She says only her family knew about the letters until last month when Kilpatrick wrote and said he wanted her to get the word out about his battle for justice. She shared the letter with the Freep.
"This case continues to be seemingly riddled with deception and devoid of fairness," Kilpatrick wrote. "There is NO LOSS TO THE CITY OF DETROIT IN THIS CASE WHATSOEVER!”
