Sen. Virgil Smith
Well, here's one explanation for the erratic behavior of Democratic state Sen. Virgil Smith of Detroit.
Elisha Anderson of the Detroit Free Press reports that Smith, who is accused of assaulting his ex-wife and shooting her 2015 Mercedes-Benz, could use an insanity defense in the case against him.
The Freep reports that Smith was ordered to undergo a psychiatric examination relating to his criminal responsibility “based upon the filing of a notice of insanity defense.”
The Freep cites a court document.
“Smith will assert at the trial of this matter a substantial disorder of thought or mood significantly impaired his judgment, behavior, capacity to recognize reality, or ability to cope with ordinary demands of life,” his lawyer wrote in a document.
Smith and his attorney did not respond to the Freep for comment.
